The Building
The Markthal was built stone by stone on the very site where Rotterdam was founded in 1270. During construction, numerous medieval artifacts were discovered, including vases, tools, and cannonballs. These can be viewed in the permanent exhibition De Tijdtrap (The Time Staircase). Not only is the exterior of the Markthal spectacular, there's also plenty to see inside. Artist Arno Coenen created Horn of Plenty here, the largest artwork in the Netherlands. Covering an area of 11,000 m² in vibrant color, it’s often referred to as the Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam.
