History
Where Chinatown is now located, the area between the Amsterdamse Veerkade, Wagenstraat, and Gedempte Burgwal, used to be The Hague's Jewish quarter. After the Second World War, the neighborhood was largely empty and dilapidated. In the 1970s, the municipality decided to renovate the area, after which more and more Chinese people settled in this neighborhood. The authentic Chinese gates were built in 2009.
Chinese Atmospheres
Behind the Chinese gates, you can experience the atmosphere of Asian restaurants, Chinese specialties, exotic products, and various Chinese shops. The unique Chinese gateway in Wagenstraat is made of original Chinese building materials. The stones and columns feature Chinese engravings, and the painted roof is a wooden structure of more than a thousand parts. Below the street signs, you'll find the Chinese translation, and Chinese sayings are engraved on various curbs. Although Chinatown is located in the heart of The Hague's city center, it feels like you're somewhere completely different.
